Coffee with a porn actress…REALLY???

photo (5)

~ I was sitting at coffee recently talking philosophy with a couple friends, when a 30ish woman at the next table over leaned into the conversation,

Ya know, when I was younger, nobody ever talked to me about philosophy. I just went with the motions and didn’t know what the point of my life even was….it led me down an awful path” she said

Apparently, at nineteen the woman found herself in California working in the porn business, “It was absolutely terrible. I did things that still give me nightmares” she said

It isn’t difficult to search the Internet to find ex-porn stars who are now activists against the industry. For every woman who wasn’t traumatized by the porn industry, it seems as though there are 10 who are suffering massive psychological upheaval in their lives.

If you haven’t seen the documentary Girls Wanted on Netflix I highly recommend it (though there are very disturbing images throughout so viewer beware). It highlights the manner in which the porn industry preys on young women and promises them a life of excitement, only to toss them to the side a year later after the girl has been violated in every imaginable manner.

Am I saying that ALL nudity in film is bad or that all nudity in art is bad? Not at all. Since I’m not an expert in any way on the porn industry, I will just say that all porn which objectifies women and portrays them in inhumane manners is evil to its core (and I suspect that a LOT of porn fits that description).

We live in a strange world. We talk about equality and people criticize certain politicians for being too nasty…..yet every single day more than 70% of all men in the Western World and between 30-40 % of women watch pornography which is far more evil than the worst things a nutty politician could possibly say in front of the camera.

While politicians are definitely a problem (ALL of them!!) the real problem in the Western World seems to be staring at us through our mirrors. Things aren’t getting better culturally because citizens themselves have decided they don’t want to change their behavior.

Then again….what do I know. I’m just the author of a science fiction novel, and if you haven’t obtained a copy yet, why not??? <click here>

If you live in the Washington, D.C. area drop me a line and we can get coffee. I will be visiting April 15th-16th.

  1. Yeah, i have indeed heard a lot about the evils of the porn industry. But, it piles up riches. I think people get seduced by the Jenna Jameson kind of ‘success stories’. I wonder if she has a ‘success story’ to tell

  2. The issue is that we hold up to a certain moral and choose to deny everything else wrong. Sticking our heads in the sand.

Our world is the real life version of ‘See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil!”

We build this country our countries on it. And it continues as it is the most profitable.
If money is our moral than our minds and hearts are sold to the devil. And it is not just the Porn industry.

Corporate thinking might be our way of living.

can’t argue with you Rantin Crow, well said!

  3. Well said sir!!! I see you have restarted your coffee shop tour, any chance of coming to Denver? Miss you on twitter, need someone to chat about House of Cards!!! Looking forward to reading your book, so is Callie!!!

    • Yup, it’s just gonna be a matter of “when”. Since i didn’t make it there two years ago, it will be at the top of the list sometime this summer. I have so many friends who live in Denver and everyone has been “begging” me to come out there. I will keep u posted 🙂

  4. I only watch fair trade humanely created porn without the use of anti-biotics and hormones.

  5. I think people watch porn/read erotica because it’s the next best thing to actually having a fulfilling sexual relationship. Unfortunately, emotionally and physically fulfilling sex is hard to come by in today’s culture, yet our human need to connect still persists. How to connect more? There’s a good question…

    • ” think people watch porn/read erotica because it’s the next best thing to actually having a fulfilling sexual relationship. ”

100% agree with you…sadly it is such a poor substitute for a relationship.

  6. Laws, boundaries, hunger, hormones, affection , attraction ,emotions lead us nowhere but to frustration and the relief is masturbation. In that moment no ones cares about what all nasty things a porn star might have gone through; ironically we tend to like more nasty things when our wildness awakens.
